June is 'Men's Health Month'. Here's Why Hydration is Important for Overall Male Health.




Hydration is the basis to good health for every body but, for men, drinking water has very specific and beneficial health values that impact everything from testosterone levels, to brain/blood function, to muscular strength.


1. Hydration helps maintain hormonal/testosterone levels. Drinking water helps balance your body's hormones - when that balance is interrupted, it can impact your physical performance and well-being. Dehydration can put your body into stress, raising cortisol levels which reduce testosterone.


In an article by Men's Clinic: "A study was conducted where males would complete three identical training sessions in various states of hydration (hydrated, dehydrated by ~2.5% body mass, and dehydrated by ~5% body mass.) Researchers would measure the male’s hormone levels (including cortisol and testosterone) during their states of rest, while training, immediately after exercising, and 60 minutes after exercising. The researchers found that cortisol levels increased significantly when candidates exercised while dehydrated in both states. The increase in testosterone levels that are normally associated with exercising was greatly suppressed when the participants were dehydrated. So even if you exercise regularly, it may not be enough to increase testosterone levels if you are consistently dehydrated."


Drinking enough water on a daily basis keeps your body in homeostasis, allowing a hormonal balance by reducing physical stress.


2. Erectile dysfunction may be due to dehydration. As part of maintaining hormonal levels, drinking water and eating water-based foods (like watermelon) may help reduce instances of erectile dysfunction. Though more studies need to be conducted for researchers to know the exact reason, many doctors believe that blood flow is the biggest factor; when blood volume is lower (this happens due to dehydration) blood vessels are constricted and cannot stay taut/tense throughout the body thus leading to erectile dysfunction.


Hydration not only improves blood flow but can improve brain function and responses to sensory arousal. Since the brain is over 70% water, hydration is imperative to brain function and cognition.


3. Water keeps your muscles strong and stamina up. According to Men's Journal, a 1.5% reduction in hydration can lead to measurable strength loss. 40-50% of your weight is muscle so it is no wonder that dehydration can have a negative influence on muscular health.


Going back to the science in the first point, this article in Men's Health discusses the benefits of hydration and building muscle: "In a study published in the European Journal of Endocrinology, the scientists asked test subjects to cycle on a stationary bike and measured fluctuations in their levels of human growth hormone (HGH). One group was given enough water to replace fluids lost through sweat, while the other went without. The hydrated cyclists produced 40% more HGH, translating to more fat lost and more muscle maintained.


The results suggest that receptors in the bloodstream stimulate HGH production when the fluid level ruses. This supports the findings of a separate study at California State University, which observed that dehydrated body builders experience a spike in the stress hormone cortisol and a limited release of testosterone and HGH after heavy lifting."
